Using the Apple keyboard for ipad

After reading a number of posts and seeing some video, it seems that getting the keyboard to work with first your computer and then switching to the ipad isn't as easy as it should be. Not Apple like to be sure.
First you have to delete the bluetooth device shown in the window of system preferences under the bluetooth icon. Only after doing this can the keyboard be free to pair with the ipad. Some have said all you had to do was disconnect in the software in the status menu bar, where it says devices and then disconnect. But I found that it just came back when I tried to pair it with the ipad. So in the end the whole device needs deleting.
Hopefully Apple will have a software fix soon. Jon L

Calibrating your imac monitor

Glad I came across this site, very helpful. Took me a couple of times to find just the right method. Using a 5000k lightbulb, but it wouldn't set at 5000 kelvin, so used 6500 for a much better result.
White point set at 6500
Gamma set at 2.2
Luminance at the suggested 120
Had to set the brightness at max for the Cinema display and adjust with eye-one. Using the keyboards brightness controls. WIth the imac, I had to open up system preferences and move the brightness control and then close system prefs to see where the luminance set. If not right, open up the system prefs and move the brightness again-until it's right.
Both monitors look great. Can't tell them apart. Need to have something printed to make sure. Jon L

Firewire connections

The two hard drives I have are Buffalo drives with 4pin, 6pin, usb 2 connections. I am using the 6 pin for best results. Using a firewire 400 Belkin hub that now connects to my new imac i3. I had this hub already. I will in the future want a 800 hub. A connection from a firewire 4 pin on the hard drive to the hub 6 pin connector does work, as well as a 6 pin hub (400) to the 9 pin (800), where I hooked up from the hub to the imac. Found that these are backwards compatible. All I had to get was a 800 to 400 cable. As I stated I opted for the 6pin on the hard drive to the 6pin to 400 hub connection. Then had a 6pin on one end of the cable to the 9pin for the imac.
Having only one firewire 800 on the imac doesn't help. you can also hook up straight from the hard drive to the usb connection on the imac. You can also get a usb hub 2.0 hub if needed.

new imac 21inch first impressions

Got the imac and fast. Ordered Weds and got it Friday morning. Didn't add anything than stock, or it would have taken longer to get. Beautiful compared to my 2006 model imac. All metal is much more attractive. Only thing that bugs me is the glossy screen. When your used to matt, glossy stinks. Just my opinion. I can already tell it will be problematic when using in photoshop. Not to mention I couldn't launch CS 3. Thanks Adobe. At least Lightroom had no problems. New SD slot is nice, but no picture on how to put it in? To bad no flash card, as this is what I still use.
And now the time it took to get up and running. 3.5 hours to transfer info, as I didn't have the correct cord (6.pin to 9pin) from 400 firewire to 800. So usb took some time. Bought the cord later that day so I could use the firewire on some drives and my hub. Hub won't recognize the 4 to 6 pin firewire connections, not with the new imac firewire 800. Hub works fine with firewire 400 on my old imac. Switched to usb on two drives-need another hub as I ran out of usb connections. New imac has one less firewire connector?
Other things, to bright of a screen. Turned down the brightness until I can calibrate it. Bought the extended warranty as I've heard these imac's are tough to take apart. All wireless keyboard and mouse are nice! You will have to update the software, as it's 10.6.3.
Have to get used to smaller keyboard and mouse. Keyboard is 40% smaller. Mouse is very nice, but a bit small for big hands. Overall I'm quite pleased. Jon L

Ipad review: first 24 hours

My first 24 hours with the ipad. To say the least, it’s very impressive. Easy to use and it’s addictive. I loaded a number of apps on it and find the large screen a real pleasure to work with. The iphone apps just don’t cut it at 2x. Some have been modified to work with the ipad.
The ipad is a bit weighty, but I don’t find it that noticeable. The battery life is fantastic! I recommend turning down the brightness for extended battery life. The screen for me was just to bright at it’s setting.
So far the internet is great, even the video’s are mostly working with the ipad. For me this was a big concern and it looks like Apple is taking it very seriously. I expect html to become a major force in the next year. One of the biggest surprises for me, was the added icon on the front of the tablet (right bottom) where it let you use the ipad as a photo slide show viewer. What a great idea. This allows you to save a few hundred dollars right there, if you ever thought of getting one.
I can’t say enough about the speed and size of the ipad. You really have to see it up close and play with it to really understand just how it can work. I don’t have a notebook, so for me this is perfect. I already own the iphone and imac, so this frees me up and lets me really go mobile when doing basic things on a computer. Even thou I don’t see myself using the 3g model as I only got the wifi one. I will use my iphone for mobile. But around the house or on vacation this is a must.
Now to the things I really have issues with-the keyboard sucks! Not the placement or the fact that it’s virtual, but the fact that I just can’t use it for anything but short notes. Why, it’s just to damn touchy, with even the slightest touch of the screen and your typing away. I don’t know if apple can reduce the pressure on the key tabs so you can lay your hands down to type or not. But for me, you will need the added keyboard if you do any serious typing. If your a student, get the keyboard.
I did find app’s for doing nothing but audio. This may be the way to go if you don’t want to use the virtual keyboard. Another one of my issues, is the same as with the iphone. If your depending on your data being safe-does the app have it’s own backup feature, if not-I hope your data backup on your computer never becomes corrupt or you will lose everything. Something to keep in mind as I have learned the hard way.
Was it worth the money, for me it was, but for someone who already owns a notebook-id pass. Forgot, if you charge the ipad, use a separate outlet, as it will use up the battery if your connected to a computer that is asleep.

Now that the hype has calmed down, isn't Apple so good at this marketing without spending a dime. The question remains, who wants one. I do! And I'll give my reasons.
Reasons for own an ipad. Mostly the internet connection, wether it's wifi or G3 connection. I'm thinking for those who are business,students (money and weight), older folks like me who wear bifocals and can't read comfortably on an iphone. And then there is books. Digital books. Looks like well all be paying higher prices now that Apple is in the game. Amazon had the market to them selfs and could dictate the prices. Also look at all the new consumers who just want to get email, surf, photos, books, and can't afford a notebook or don't need one. I know of a few older folks who just need this and need it to be simple and easy to use, without spending so much upfront.
As for "flash" it remains to be seen wether this will become a problem for sales. With flash being a battery hog and Apple choosing to be non flash on the ipod and ipad, my guess is that if Apple can sell enough of these, html (flash) will surfice, that and H.264. flash and mobile
Those crying for a camera on the ipad, it may become an issue for those in business (tele conferences) or consumers who have no other device. For me and most people, who cares. I have a pro camera and an iphone.
The interesting thing I picked up from the release of the ipad was Steve Jobs telling us "this may be the most important thing I've done at Apple". What does he know that most of the press don't? Besides being apple to sit on the couch, bed, porch or other places around the house and not be stuck at a desk. I think the ipad will be that tech that has shown what will eventually come. A ipad notebook, one that you can have the full Mac Os on and replace the notebook. I have always thought that being able to mount the ipad as a desktop or pull it out of it's holder connections and take it mobile will be the future. A broad band future as the networks become more powerful.
Things I don't like. No multi tasking. I think Apple will find a way to do this. Here is one optimist. I see it being more important on an ipad vs iphone. Processor speed? That remains to be seen, as a lot of net books have 1.6 or better speed; but this chip is from Apples new purchase of a chip maker. No USB, but that opens the ipad up and you know? Apple control. At least they got a keyboard.
Which one will I be getting. The wifi only version. I'm not paying anymore to AT&T. Jon L

If your like most folks who own an iphone and wish to see just what kind of things you can do with it, one of the biggest areas is database of your movies, music and books. So searching in itunes apps, I found threw the years in owning my iphone what I believe are the best for my needs.
Be it for Music, books, movies, you have some choices for the iphone. From Pocketpedia2(not cheap and like Bento, very intensive). Juicy library (does movies, books, music in one app) is buggy and no backup. Album dashboard, Book library, Dvd dashboard, Bento (where you need to buy the desktop version to). Idiscography, and a few others I may have missed.
Some of these have backups and others do not.
My ultimate choice came down to three apps by the same developer. Disc Tracker, Myboxoffice, ibookshelf. All of these have the same structure in the database and the most detailed, multiple choice views, and with scanning features that cost an extra 99 cents per app-in my view is well worth it if you have a lot of media. Has built in camera if you can't get an image or the one u want. All of these apps cost 1.99 on the app store. In my opinion there is nothing to compare with the details, choices this app gives you. Even write your own private notes on each media input. Each has a backup & restore feature. Other areas of interest: search, landscape view of photos. Rate product, if you viewed or listened or read the item. What type of media, blueray or other and if it's loaned out. Genre.
Update, Looks as tho I missed one. My Library by the same author and it covers cd's, movies, and books under one app. Not as detailed, but nice.
I suggest you check out a number of these for yourself. If you are someone who wishes to have everything and don't mind the time and expense, than "Bento" may be best suited.

Started looking for a PDF organizer for websites I wanted to download information from. Articles, PDF's, News stories, etc. I found three of them that seem to be the top ones to get.

But for the sake of ease, I choose the pdf centric apps. I have played with all three demo's and found that to my liking is "yojimbo", as it does more than just PDF's. So does "papers", but it's specialty is PDF's and search for academics. I opted for both "Yojimbo" and "Papers".
I like Papers for the iphone app that comes separately. So from your desktop to iphone your PDF's can be accessed. What I mostly like about "yojimbo" and "Papers" is that you can download them right from the web, already from the browser. Just save as if your printing and your webpage saves as a PDF. This is great to keep all kinds of documents for future reference.
One hint is in saving the whole document if it has multiple pages on your browser, is to hit the print icon. Some of the articles come up in one long page, making it perfect to save as a PDF. This way you don't have to try and work with it later in Preview. You will pay between 40 & 70 dollars. Jon L

New iMac's and disappointments

Some thoughts on the new imac. I really like the idea of cinematic screens, but not on a computer! Why, because real estate is lost. The 24 inch screens had more vertical space to work with. Not all bad, as the Apple TV can work well with the new models(Update: found out this isn't true). One solution is for the imac to take on the iphones technology using sensors for vertical and horizontal views. I realize that the imac can't achieve this as is with the size of the screens. But, why can't Apple make a screen that turns horizontal and vertical - I have seen it done on other brand name monitors. I guess it might be problematic for the cords running into the computer (but were talking about Apple). If you remove the icons of the dash board you can get another inch or so of real estate.
The glossy reflections still bother me big-time! If your a photographer, artist, graphic designer or someone who works with color editing this can be a problem. If they can have matte screens for Macbook pros, why not imac's? I still love the matte screen on my imac 2006 17in) late edition model. The colors are still great and no reflections of any kind. Apple just seems to be uninterested in those who need or wish for matte screens.
Even if we have to pay more, I want that option. I do like the new computers, but will not be upgrading just because of that problem. This leaves me in a quandary as to where to go from here. The mac mini? No! Not enough power(graphics card). The Macbook pro? No, to expensive for my taste.
One last beef. Why can't apple make the calibration of the monitor easier than it is. On the third party monitors there is a much more professional options for getting the monitor calibrated at it's peak level of capability.
Don't wish this to sound like a rant, it's just that we can and do expect the most from Apple!
Checked out the new imac mouse; just love it. Simple but a bit small for bigger hands. Give us two sizes please. Jon L

Battery charger for the iphone

After realizing that I needed backup power for my iphone, I went on a search for it. The web being the best place, as the stores I went to had little or nothing to offer.
Hense, googling a number of sites, reading reviews-I came upon the Mili.link I found it by asking myself what I really needed and wanted. Did I want a powerful battery backup or something that was contoured and easy to go with my iphone? I chose the latter. I didn't really want a long chord going from battery charger to iphone, even thou I could charge the iphone 4 or 5 times from 10% charge. The uses on a plane ride would have been perfect for such a device. But, needing something for everyday use, I found some I really thought would work well, but sacrificing the power. I looked at the Fastmac Truepower iv, which I almost bought. Has more power than the Mili and a flashlight. Seidio, nice compact, cheap, but lacking any real power. The famous or well known "Mophie juice pack." Good, but problems with peeling materials and lesser power. Then there's the u2o ipu-5400 packs mega power, but have to use a chord to the iphone. If you check Amazon or bymeaniphone link , you can find more info and make an informed decision on what will work best for you. One last thing, I'm reading that if you get a battery charger that covers the whole iphone, expect potential problems with reception. Jon L

Snow Leopard

With the advent of the new release of Snow leopard, how was the upgrade and how much speed improvement was there really? For me, it wasn't a very good upgrade. One, I couldn't upgrade at all. So I had to erase my drive and do a complete new install. I only used snow leopard for the installation and used my time machine backup for getting things back. My main problem was using time machine, make sure you don't exclude your main internal drive or you won't be backing up anything. Other problem, was a quirk of not being able to quit a program? I rebooted and repaired permissions-haven't seen the problem again. Next problem, my mouse is crippled, as logitech hasn't completed it's leopard update drivers?
Regarding my image editing software. Lightroom had no problems. Cs3 wouldn't start. Licensing issue and I haven't resolved it yet? Adobe, damn you! Wonder just how much time I will have to spend just getting it to boot.
Otherwise, it's a nice upgrade. But without being able to upgrade my ram or video card, it wouldn't have been worth the upgrade if I had to pay a regular price. But at 29 dollars it was worth it.
P.S. After spending about 6 hours, I fixed Cs3 and had it launch. Not even sure how I did it. But manually changed a few key things in preferences in user mode and system library. Using my time machine backup prefs. Here is a link to some of the issues. Adobe sucks in my opinion. What a mess. Jon L

The one that Apple should have made. It's an operating system built into the web browser. Looks sweet. Although I think Apple can do so much more if it holds all the apps like the iphone. I may get one if the price is right. Apple needs to get to work on this big-time. My opinion only, as they may be afraid of the notebooks being cannibalized.

Making an emergency Flash drive

I tried for years to get a good flash drive for an emergency disk. One that contained all my utilities for fixing or rescuing drives and the information on them. But the drives were just to small at one and two gigs. Well now that the prices of flash drives have dropped so low, now I find it is much easier to just buy a 16gb flash drive and put the whole OsX operating system on it. Of course this is the trimmed down version. Just the basic operating system. You will find this in the Leopard disk that came with your mac. Use the custom option.
I also tried the 8gb, but it is so slow (everything action crawls) and you have to trim down the operating system to an extreme in order to fit it in. But it can be done. But I’m much happier with the 16gigs.
Using the Leopard disk I have, I booted up from this and then formatted my flash drive using GUID and Extended Journaled with a partition of one. Then after it reboots you can update on the computer software update app or like I did, download the combo version off of Apples site.
Then just add the utility apps you want on the flash drive. Repair permissions and you have your new emergency disk. If you did it right, you should have just over 7gigs space left and it's much snapper performance than the 8gig or smaller. JonL

Automator (text to audio aiff)

I used to use ispeakit, but decided I didn't want to pay for an upgrade. So after doing a google search I found "Automator" in my own app folder. I found an article showing how to make a simple plug-in within automator that converts text to speech or audio file.

You can put this into itunes or on your ipod or iphone. Just double click the file and it's in itunes. Works for when you want to listen to something instead of read it. Or when your not able to read, but can listen. Or just write your own audio book.
You can find the automator workflow plug-ins under users-home folder-library-workflows-applications-finder folder.
I made a new folder in my documents called "audio books" for saving when using automator. Then put the folder in the side bar for easy access.

Lightroom shortcut

There was a discussion on moving from lightrooms develop to library and back again. Some complained about the time to go back and forth.

Short cut from develop to other library folders is here. In develop, look to the bottom where the thumbnails are. Right above the thumbnails, see the writing of details on the image. There is a downward v at the far right of the text. Click here and see all your library folders without ever leaving develop mode. Jon L

A Better Finder Rename

After finding this software posted on the dpreview board, I took a closer look. It is very simple software for renaming your photos and other files; music, text-with extra details on the website. You can also save as presets, thou I didn't do any.
I'm speaking strictly from a photographers use. The best way to learn is the demo and the screencast on the website to get you up to speed. Then read the Overview on the webpage for more details. The data changes will show in realtime previews, so it makes it easy to see what is going to show as the end result. My only misgiving, was the fact that dropping folders seems a bit confusing. Seems best to open folder first and then drop the images, one or all, or the sequence might be shown as a folder, for the first image.
I recommend this software for those who have lots of images and don't wish to change them one at a time. Should save anyone hours of time consuming work. If your like me, I can see it useful for generic photo-shoots (weddings, vacation, webmasters), but whether naming folders or like me, going threw every image and then typing in a caption,label, if this would make sense for organization of your photo library is your call.
Not sure if there are any photoshop software or plugins in this area. The closest things I can find is Graphic converter. Jon L

Lightroom workflow presets

Lightroom presets for workflow. A basic starting point. First you will need your monitor calibrated. Lightroom 2. Photoshop CS3 or newer.

After working with Lightroom for about two weeks now. I found that there is a learning curve to working with develop settings and trying to find the best image. I took this up, because I was getting kind of flat looking results with lightroom only. Figured I needed a good starting base to work from.

Since I already had CS3, I took the raw file from lightroom and edited it to CS3 threw edit export. Then using curves in CS3, I used Scott Kelby's Method of working shadows, mid-tones and highlights. From there I made any final tweaks opening up curves again.

Next saved the image and went back to lightroom 2. where it showed up as a PSD file. Next, I made a virtual copy of the (raw file) original and tried to match the same exposure, colour, contrast, etc. of the psd using lightroom. Making these adjustments in the develop module, mostly using Basic and Tone curves. After getting as close as possible to the settings I had made in curves with CS3 (psd file), I used the virtual copied clone file in lightroom to make a preset.

I called this preset "CS3 snap" and use it as my base starting point in lightroom. Works pretty good and I make tweaks from there when working with a new image. I think there is room for other presets in areas like hard backlight and Black N White. I made another for backlit images.
You will have to make new presets for every different camera you use.

Would like to know how other lightroom users are getting consistant results. Improving processes, techniques. Would like to know how it works for others. Jon L

Removing Files on your Mac

The best way is the installer that came with the software. If it has an de-installer in the same install app. If not, then try one of these.

Or you can try Spotlight, which you might use to track down any other files not deleted.
Also of note: Some recent talk again about virus software for the Mac. I don't recommend any of it; if you absolutely need something, try "ClamXav" It's shareware. I use only ClamXav and never have any file problems; except an occasional mail file, which is usually a windows attachment. Which is benign to Mac's anyway, that is if it is even a virus?
Most important is a firewall setup that is already in the Operating software, which I have discussed in previous posts. Jon L

News Readers from itune apps

I have looked closely at a number of News readers and came to buy two of them. I used the free version, but needed more options and be able to read away from Safari browser. I needed an app that would read online within the app itself. Both of these apps did this. If your like me, a news reader is a must to keep up to date with what's going on in the world and your interests.
I found "Manifesto" and "Byline" to be at the top of what I was looking for.
Manifesto is just a great news reader. It has it's own browser and has flagged files for referencing later. You have tabs of all sorts to control things and on the iphone you have preferences in settings. You can load all of your news feeds from google reader online. They will load up at one time or all at once. This is a good backup if things go wrong. I have to confess I found Manifesto to be just a bit simpler and less expensive then "Byline".
Byline is from google; another great app and with google, you know it will continue to improve. One thing different than "Manifesto" is the folders that come on "Byline", very nice; the only thing I would prefer is that the feeds be separate like in "manifesto" and then have the flagged articles in the separate folders. But that maybe just my preference.
Byline is controlled threw google reader online, so there is no way to add or subtract feeds from the iphone. You will have to do everything from your web browser. This is where "manifesto has it over "Byline". Everything else is much the same. You can email any article from both apps. Two other things you can do with "Byline" are sharing and notes for the community that google has online. Notes you can see in the app.
Another popular rss reader is "Newsstand", I can't say for sure how this rates, as I didn't buy it and there is no demo. But you can check it out to.
My choice for now is "Manifesto" costs less and works great and without the restrictions of the web to control feeds.

Found out there are some cookies that have spyware to track your every move. Using Macscan, I found a number of cookies that were doing this.
First check your web browsers and make sure, your preferences are set to keep cookie settings from websites you visit only; not advertisers sites.

iphone 2.0.1 update

Finally My iphone is back to a much less buggy state-before 2.0.
I find so far, it is crashing much less than before and typing is much faster; but still a few apps have slow typing. But thats most likely the app itself. I now have more than 80 apps on my iphone.
Also found that by using 50 or less apps, my iphone seems to crash a whole lot less and recovers without doing a restore. Jon L

iphone 2.0 update

Hi, just thought I'd share some things regarding the iphone and the 2.0 update. I know that some folks had problems when the servers went down. I had waited till later in the day; all went well.
Here are some problems I ran into and some solutions to them. First I tried loading new apps in itunes; couldn't get them to sync with the iphone.
So, I uploaded them straight from my iphone-all went well.
Next, some of the apps froze or wouldn't launch or would but then quit. I rebooted my iphone an this took care of the problem-this time; but not the next. Next time I had to delete the app and then reinstall again. Not sure what caused this. Some apps the screen would freeze, so holding the home button for six seconds or so, released the frozen app. Other wise, hold the home button and power button at the same time, or until the apple logo appears.
If your iphone is a brick; try and reboot or pull out simm card. Update itunes and restore iphone. If it's still a brick; make an appointment with the apple genius, at your local store.
Also, if your iphone won't backup; it's most likely that the backup has become corrupted. Once you stop the process, the backup is corrupted. To fix this, use a application on your mac called "Backup Disabler" you can use this to set a preference to backup only when you want to.
But to fix the problem of no backups, Plug it up to iTunes, hold down both home and top power key until iTunes recognizes it and you can do a restore. I had to hold mine for a while. You'll see the iTunes logo and the sync cable logo. Then restore, using a good backup and then reset all your itunes settings in the tab areas.
And finally, if your iphone apps keep crashing; it's time to restore as a new iphone. I called Apple and this seems to be the best fix. Make sure you back up your address book and photos. Jon L

Setting up a wireless network

Hi, After countless hours, days, weeks of frustration and even talking to an Apple specialist didn't help. I took it upon myself, thru trial and error, I finally got everything working the way I wanted it to.
First I have 4 computers, 3 airports (one AE and two AEBS) taking the latest AEBS and making that one my base station to work off of. Under airport tab-wireless tab, I created a wireless network and used N and G configuration. Channel automatic. WPA2 personal wireless security.
Then on the other two airports I extended the wireless network option under airport wireless tab. All three using ethernet/dhcp.
Then, here is the critical thing that made everything work in synchronicity.
Under the internet tab, I chose connection sharing; using "share a public IP address and not using wan or ethernet wan when updating. This has everything working-most importantly my iphone is working again in wifi.
PS: always repair permissions after any update.

Inside Steve's brain

Just read the book "Inside Steve"s brain" by Leander Kahney. Great book, if you like learning how people think. Steve Jobs is a perfectionist extraordinaire and a one man powerhouse of energy, focus and vision. You can't help but admire this guy who doesn't take no for an answer.
Takes an opportunity and runs with it. Gets the right people and focus to achieve his vision. The maturity of Apple from computers to ink.
Design becomes an obsessive factor in the final product; an integrated element in the products character. Like a poet, musician, the passion is to make it the best it can be-something Jobs would love to have himself.
The symphony of players take stage as Jobs directs the flow and tempo; like a classical composer he moves the piece to it's finality.
Not to say Steve doesn't have his rough spots-most people of vision and passion do seem to make most folks either hate you or love you, with little in-between. A hot temper to be sure and somewhat of an elitism abounds in his striving for the best in life. I think most people who love Apple products can empathize with Jobs desire for exceeding the average.
The digital hub is where it all begins; looking to connect everything from this platform. Audio and visual, with the right applications to make everything work with an Apple type of ease. After audio and video; the now seen ipod and iphone seem obvious extensions to take the mac.
How much of Apples soul can exist without Jobs; we can only wonder how much the other Apple cast members can fill the vacuum when Steve steps down.
One thing few artists ever achieve is taking ones art and turning it into a product money maker. (arts aesthetic value to science) Perhaps the critics will appreciate Jobs a little more now, as what's under the mask has now been revealed to be only human after all. Review by Jon L

Replacing your Imac hard drive

Hi, recently I had to replace my hard drive on my imac. The computer was having trouble starting up from the sleep mode. And clicking noises were also taking place. I wasn't sure, but thought this to be the most likely culprit.
Anyway it was a success and now I have breathed life into my older imac. Here's how I did it.
First, I did some googling and youtube searches to find out how to go about it. I found some videos and website photos on how it's done.
You will need some basic tools. Hex 6, 9, 10. A flat head and a phillips screw drivers. A towel to lay your imac screen on. A table or bed.
Imac is a 17 inch core 2 duo. White version. But if yours is different, you can google and youtube your specific imac or even mac mini. Jon L

Gimp or GNU for Leopard

For those who don't wish to spend a lot of money, Gimp comes free. You can use it for Mac, linux, windows. Gimp was first released in 1998. Two students at Berkeley, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis got the whole thing started. Neither had any experience with graphic's. Gimp stands for (Image Manipulation Program).
There are three builds for Gimp; so make sure which one will work with your Mac. It may require Apple's X11
Gimp has grown quite a bit from it's launch. Making it a quite powerful graphic's program. Gimp has layers, alpha channels, curves, a robust plug-in's. Gimp doesn't support CMYK or PANTONE color-spaces.

What to do if your Mac dies

I recently had my imac, when restarting from shut down-the tone came on and beeped twice and then flash twice again. The Memory was the problem.
This and other things will afflict you at one time or the other. So, I'm posting how to do some preventative procedures to be ready.
Going from the last post; here is more on what to do if your Mac dies. Most of the problems you will have is with software. This podcast from Typical Mac user will go into much more detail on what to do if your Mac starts acting up.
Number one is BACKUP! I like Superduper for ease of use. And or Time machine. Do this before you need to read the rest.
Victor and Steve will walk you thru it. From running hardware tests to checking compatibility issues, lets be prepared.
My Mac died-now what?
Basic Troubleshooting (quick list) From Steve Stanger on the Macattack.us
- Shut your Mac down, wait 10 to 15 seconds and restart.
- Try a safe boot - hold down the shift key after hearing the start up chime.
- Try disconnecting all peripherals connected to your computer. Boot with just your monitor, keyboard and mouse attached.
- Create a new user account, and see if the problem persists there.
- A keyboard or mouse gone bad can make it appear that your Mac is frozen.
- If an application stops responding you should force quit it.
- Relaunch the finder.
- Check free space on the system volume.
- Repair disk with Disk Utility.
- Use Cocktail, Onyx, or MainMenu to to repair disk permissions, run maintenance scripts, clean the user and system caches.
- Download and reinstall current Combo update.
- Is your computer acting up after a RAM upgrade?
- Get yourself a commercial drive tool - DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive Genius.
- If all else fails reinstall the system from scratch or do an 'archive and install'.
Also of note: I was listening to a podcast and heard that if you take your Mac into Apple, they just might keep your old hard-drive, so ask and make sure you get it back. You don't want your personal info falling into the wrong hands.

Update: Mac Maintenance

Last year I did a post on maintenance and looks like with a new operating system-we all need an update. First I got most of this from a podcast. It's worth a listen. The typical Mac user podcast.

In this area of maintenance software I would look at these.
ONYX, Main Menu, Cocktail, Mac Janitor, Maintenance. Tinkertool, and hopefully Apple Jack will get a Leopard update soon. Some are freeware and other shareware.
You can find these at Versiontracker Make sure these are updated for Leopard and not for Tiger. Some are very simple maintenance scripts and some are much more in depth. Some of these are used weekly or monthly and others are for every six months or more.
Always have a backup and quit all other software when running these programs. Other things to do to keep your mac humming, are:
Don't delete cookies; Launch Services; Zap the Pram (shift command +p +R as your mac reboots. Restart every few days to clear out swap files.
What we want is a smooth running computer and doing these preventive steps will avoid problems from developing.
I warn everyone about trying every program under the sun; check them out and make sure if it is safe to run and make sure you have the latest version update. An example is Xslimmer-will you be able to update the software after slimming down the files? Tidy up (shareware) is for finding duplicates and App Zapper is for deleting all files connected to a program.
Also look for files that take up space-do you need them? Toast for example has files saved that you may not need and using megabite's for nothing. Or how about iphoto, Aperture, Lightroom; are some of these using the same files?
One key thing is to run permissions before a major update and after. Make sure things are kept in the proper place. You can use disk utility for this. Other useful tools are Super duper for backups and time machine. Right now only Time machine is available for Leopard. I use time machine on another drive partitioned with Leopard.

Reducing launch time for applications

Hi, found this on a video. By clicking info (command i) on any application, you can look to the languages arrow and by un-checking the boxes for other languages, keeping your native language only, you speed up the launch time for any application that holds many languages.
Take CS3 for example; what language do you speak? Just un-check all the others and relaunch your application. Watch how fast it loads after you do this.
I noticed that many third party apps have already done this for you; but Apple software has every language you can think of. JonL

Webcams for mac's

I bought a mac mini and wanted to use a webcam for it; but came to find out how few there really are. So this is what I found out.
First Apple stopped making any for their mac's as most imac's and notebooks already have them built in-except the mac mini and macpro.

Next, I called logitech and creative and found out they have webcams that work; but not with all mac applications-photo booth. Problem is, they don't seem to really know. So apon further investigation, I found that the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 and the creative Live! cam optia AF both work with Mac's; but what apps again? I looked at Amazon reviews and found out one guy stating that the Logitech works with most mac apps-iChat, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, and Photo Booth. It doesn't work with iMovie.

So read the Mac reviews mixed in with Pc. You wont find any help from the two companies; makes you wonder about support?

Wiretap studio

What a nice product. Don't know a lot about audio, but this program is so intuitive and useful. I just downloaded Daryl Hall off of Safari web browser and it couldn't have been easier. Loaded it up in itunes and on my nano ipod in seconds.
Wiretap studio can record anything! There is a free demo to try; I got mine and within the 30 day trial-I bought it. 10% discount till end of Jan 08.
I found out that snapz pro x does the video-yes it's the same company Ambrosia. Ishowu is an alternative for a third of the price; but not as easy to use.

Leopard external boot disc

Here again, are a number of ways to make a bootable external disc. Here is how I did mine. I loaded up my Leopard disc and rebooted. Then started disc utility and Making sure what Mac you have and using the right partition map.
I use Guid for my intel imac.
Then Partitioned into two volumes; the first I called leopard and the second I called time machine-for my backups. Works great. I used 50mb for 1st and 247mb for 2nd. Now I have a bootable drive and backup on the same external hard drive.

Also of note: The only book I could find, was at the Apple store. Leopard by Robin Williams. So far a good book. I found a number of important things about security. Most in the system preferences. Accounts; network; security and sharing. To much to go into detail; but things I wouldn't have found without Williams book.
One thing everyone who uses Safari should know; under preferences-general tab. Uncheck the open safe files after downloading.
Also of use is knowledge about your wireless router if you use one. I found a good article on the basics in security.

Update: I have leopard up and running. It went very smoothly on my imac. I just followed the archive and install method and updated my software as soon as I booted up.
I thought I'd talk a little about what to look out for and what's in leopard. First don't be in a rush to get leopard, as with any major upgrade-I think most people by now know that waiting a week or two is a good bet to find out if the third party applications will run smoothly or not with leopard.
This will keep you from spending endless hours or days trying to get this to work on your main computer's software/hardware. Then when the time is right you can upgrade with little or no problems. Or maybe you will wait for the first upgrade from apple to fix any known problems. Let's hope that there won't be to many issues to deal with.
The Apple website gives you a good feel for what's in leopard and the "maccompanion.com" has a series of articles going into detail. All links can be found on my blog. Here is the link to system requirements need to work in leopard. If your mac doesn't meet the requirements, you will have to upgrade. JonL

This option moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X. This option is available only for volumes with Mac OS X already installed. Usually, if you select this method, you will want to also select (check) "Preserve Users and Network Settings" which imports existing user accounts, home folders, and your network settings into the new system.
Make sure you run disk utility to check for any disk problems before you install Leopard.

imac consumer gets a bad deal from Apple!

Here is the issue: What I learned from the camera makers and how it affects us computer users.

First the camera makers were fighting over who had the best camcorder with "Raw". Then when sales cut into the photo systems offered by Nikon and Canon; the camera makers took out Raw and left us with "jpeg". This effectively forced folks to upgrade to the higher priced camera systems. That is if they wanted to use the latest technology they used to get in there camcorders.

Now is Apple doing the same for it's line? By effectively cutting out the lower end prices for photographers - pro and otherwise, the company forces you to pay for the mac pro.

It worked for the camera makers, why not Apple! I still have my Pro 1 from Canon, as I will not pay for the high end camera system I don't want or need. Well, lets hope Apple gets the message. I suggest everyone email Apple and let them know how we photographers feel about being forced into paying more so the company can bleed the consumer for more money.

What artist's like me found out, is it was cheaper for us to just upgrade every five years then buy a Mac pro everytime. As technology changes so much; after upgrading your Mac pro; it was obsolete in a year or two after you upgraded anyway, as the leap in technology left you far behind. Thats why I bought the imac "last version" instead of the Mac Pro.

Let Apple hear from the us at dpreview and others loud and clear on this issue. JonL

Hi, came across this software and have to say I was impressed. Simple but powerful and using zones, like the zone system to impove images. Macworld has a review, for more info. Also, look at the tutorial movies for how the software works; very simple and elegant.

Updated to fotomagico 2. I am looking at the compression types and wondering if the standard quicktime to HD 264 can be improved on. They state that there is a huge reduction in quality when exporting from quicktime. Anyone know. Here is the list; does someone have a better compression format?

Wireless internet with Airport Extreme

Hi, havent posted in a while; moved and then was sick for sometime. Okay, onto the post. I bought myself a Airport extreme for wireless connection thru the house. Three floors and four computers. One a pc and three mac's.
I was very new to this; so it was a pain getting the older mac's online.
I bought a Aerolite usb wireless adapter and had some trouble getting the G4 to recognize it. I got it to work after making sure it was viewable as a name for the list of network options in the software.
And now things are running much smoother. I haven't had time to really analyze every single tab and function of the airport extreme and there is a lot.

Bryce 6.1 has finally arrived. I have used this program in the past and have watched it grow. It has been sold off a few times and has hurt release updates. I haven't used it since version 4. I look forward to getting the latest version.
For those not familiar with this program and wondering why someone who is a photographer would like this. You have a camera inside the software and you can angle it in any direction and create your own virtual world. Then rendering it to make the image. It's great if your not shooting with your digital camera, to keep your artistic edge.

Just thought I'd pass on what I've been reading lately about security; especially the internet. This is where as mac users, I feel is the biggest threat to security.
The firewall; Osx built in one and third party options.
From what I'm reading, the one from Apple is an all or nothing proposition. I close it up completely, as I don't do any file sharing over the internet or use an airport express. To close the firewall completely; just open up system preferences and hit the sharing icon. Then under the tab: firewall, uncheck all of the allow checkboxes ( I have allow network time checked only). Then click on the advanced tab and check all three boxes. Click okay. Then start the firewall protection, where it says Firewall on or off.

My trip to Quebec city

Hi, love my new fotomagico software! Made a quicktime movie of my trip to Quebec City, Canada. Went there in late September. Hope you like. The software is very intuitive. The more I played with it, the more it can do. I really need to study all the export features, as it was a bit overwhelming.
I have found that using photo/jpeg on the export works best. The best way to improve quality is to increase the image size of your jpegs or tiffs.

Here is another software program for free; it's called "isquint" and converts quicktime to mp4's for ipod and TV. It's a bit buggy, but for free. JonL

G4 cube for backup computer

Hi, I discovered that the G4 cube makes for a great backup computer. If your main computer goes down or needs repair. Or if you want a computer to test your software; hardware or updates on.
The cube is relatively inexpensive and small. I bought 3 and gave 2 out for gifts. I only updated the Ram and hard drive. No great speed here, but not slow either. So far, It can handle upgrading to Tiger without any trouble. Won't know about Leopard, until it arrives.
You can get them cheap on ebay or a few online outlets. Prices go for about 150 to 400. Just make sure what comes with the cube; sometimes it comes with the power supply and sometimes not. Does it come with monitor; speaker? All the components will cause the price to vary - so shop around. Adding ram is cheap and hard drives up to 120 gigs go for around 75 dollars. Larger hard drives require more work and software. You will need a monitor, for the cube. I already had a second one. You can get the keyboard and mouse for under 50 dollars at macmall.
Make sure you have inside the cube everything you need. Modem if you won't be using cable or ethernet. Sound is threw usb connection; speakers are cheap and you will need a mini usb sound card adapter. You can get both for under 20 dollars.
I thought about a mac mini, but the cube is still cheaper and fast enough for my needs. A mac mini cost 600; you need a monitor and keyboard; mouse. You can do all kinds of upgrading if you like; cpu; dvd; Graphics card. But I myself don't need them or the added cost. The speed of the 450 and 500 cpu is good enough. Parts are fairly cheap to replace. You can do all the work yourself with these two tools (a T8 and T10 screwdriver set) for under 10 dollars.
Oh, and best of all you won't need to use Classic or Os9( unless you need to upgrade your firmware). If you need any firmware updates or pdf's for taking apart your cube or manuals; leave me your email and I'll zip file them to you. JonL

USB Flash Memory

With prices becoming very cheap in the last few months; this is a good way to transfer data from one computer to another. The future for flash data storage is going to grow huge in the next few years; replacing hard drives. The cost will remain high until it's common place.
Just like hard drives, remember to partition your usb flash drive; I had one crash my computer, because it was partitioned for fat (meaning windows and mac).
Also, you can use your usb flash drive for a boot-able drive; checkout an earlier post on the subject.

Warning on disk utility "erase free space"

When using the disk utility application, be aware of using the (erase free space) option. Use it only from an external harddrive. If you use it on your startup harddrive you will have to force quit and it will cause some problems.

DNG controversy

Like some of you are discovering; DNG archival standard, just doesn't seem to have everyone onboard. From Photographers to Camera makers, to software editors. I for one have not converted yet and don't plan on it, until these issues are resolved. Using DNG also enlarges your files.
One issue I have is with the digicams and camera makers:
I have noticed that camera makers are excluding the digicams from using Raw files; I believe it's because they want photographers to buy the expensive SLR's. I used to own a system, but now find I can do most of what I want with a digicam like the Pro 1. All this talk by Canon and their excuse about megapixals and sensors, I believe is BS! They don't have to keep increasing pixel size and I'm sure that the sensors could be made bigger. JonL

Security for your Mac

I have been trying to find out as much as possible to secure my mac from prying eyes. From Keychain lockouts to using disk utility for compressing files and locking them with encryption. Don't use file vault, unless your an expert. Some say once you use file vault you can't quit it.
As far as Viruses go; from what I'm reading, it's mostly malware, which is minor and comes threw email. Just don't accept attachments from those you don't know. I use a freeware application called "ClamXav" for mac. And if your going to use bootcamp, you will probably need a virus software for your windows. JonL

Hi, if your like me; one of the new imac owners, your finding just how difficult it seems to be to calibrate your monitor. I have been reading a number of posts regarding this topic and have tried to filter out some of the better information on the subject.
Update: have now calibrated my two monitors with success. I bought an eye-one display 2. Not to say this is the only one out there; just the one I have.
